Dual SIM card phone - Samsung D880 DuoS

Mobile phones that can carry and work with two SIM cards in nothing new really. We’ve seen quite a few such models, but usually made by little known manufacturers and mainly in Asia.

Well, it looks like Samsung is planing to bring dual SIM card mobile phones into mainstream in Europe with their Samsung DuoS D880 phone.

Both cards in Samsung SGH-D880 can work simultaneously to make and receive calls, send/receive SMS messages. The user also can easily select which card to use for mobile browsing, e-mail and other multimedia services. Your WAP/MMS/E-mail profiles are switched automatically when different card is selected.

When you receive the call, the name of the card that for the call flashes on screen and each SIM card can be assigned it’s own ringtone. In case of missed calls, the relevant card is also indicated.

Except for the dual SIM cards, Samsung DuoS D880 is your ordinary 2.5G Samsung slider with:

* GSM 900/1800/1900 EDGE connectivity
* 2.3″ QVGA Display
* 3.2 Megapixel camera with autofocus
* FM Radio
* Bluetooth 2.0 A2DP, USB 2.0
* 1200 mAh battery
* Dimensions: 104×51x18.9

The only thing not to like, is the price - Samsung D880 DuoS is expected to cost around $700. But when you consider that you won’t have to carry two different phones in your pocket, the price tag doesn’t look so bad anymore.

Samsung Malaysia Electronics (Assembly) Sdn Bhd expects to sell 10,000 units of its latest dual SIM card mobile phone, the SGH- D880, in three to four months, its director of mobile phone sales and marketing, Alex Wong, said Thursday.

He said besides the two separate SIM card lots, the mobile phone also has dual active standby connectivity.

The number of multi-SIM users, or users receiving calls and short messaging services (SMS) from more than one connection is expected to rise, says Samsung.

Quoting research company Informa Telecoms & Media, it said multi-SIM users already make up 0.7 billion out of three billion GSM mobile subscriptions, and they are expected to rise to one billion by 2009.

Wong said Samsung Malaysia also plans to launch another 40 to 50 new mobile phones next year and these are expected to increased company sales by 10 to 20 percent.

He also said Samsung ranked number two in the Malaysian market after Nokia with 21 percent market share and that it planned to "grow another strong number to challenge them."

Meanwhile, the latest phone from Samsung is aimed at premium pro-multi SIM users and businessmen. The SGH-D880 is Samsung's second dual standby phone line up after SGH-W579 which also allows two SIM cards to be used concurrently.
